State-of-the-Art Livingston Public Library to Host 2 Author Programs Next Week

Livingston Public Library

Livingston Township offers its residents many wonderful services and resources.  Having raised my children in town, I can speak with confidence about all the town has to offer.   One of the best resources available is our newly renovated library.  September 23, 2007, marked the Grand Opening of the newly renovated library, and the library has continued from that moment on to be a welcoming facility offering programs that meet the needs of all ages and groups within town.

An example of two such programs are author programs to be hosted by the library next week.

“On Tuesday, April 27, 2010 at 7:30 p.m.  author and former Livingston resident for 40
years Bernard Hailperin will discuss his novel, “The Children of Vesuvius.”http://www.thechildrenofvesuvius.com/index.html
Bernard Hailperin witnessed the destructive forces of war when he was stationed in
Italy during World War II. In “The Children of Vesuvius”, he weaves a poignant story
of what he saw during and after the war.

It follows the lives of two brothers, Mario and Tony, who are orphaned when their
parents were killed in the bombing of Naples, Italy, and who struggle to survive the
terror and chaos of the war.

When Bernard is not writing, he shares his lifetime of travel experiences with
senior complexes and nursing homes. He currently resides in Morris Plains, N.J. with
his wife, Sheila, and has a second novel in progress.” livingstonlibrary@BCCLS.org

The second author visit will take place on Thursday, April 29, 2010 at 7:30 p.m at which time Elena Gorokhova will
discuss her acclaimed memoir, “A Mountain of Crumbs.”

“Elena Gorokhova grew up in Leningrad, (now St. Petersburg) Russia.
She graduated from Leningrad University and in 1980, at age 24, she met and married
an American physics student and left Russia for good.

The 20 vignettes in “A Mountain of Crumbs” offer an engrossing portrait of a very
lively, intelligent girl coming of emotional and intellectual age in the
post-Stalinist Soviet Union.http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/13/books/excerpt-mountain-of-crumbs.html
The central theme of the book is the deep divide Gorokhova came to feel between her
own values and those of her mother, who was a committed Communist. For much of the
narrative, Gorokhova illustrates how the Russian government “…lied to us and we knew
they were lying. They knew we knew they were lying. But they kept lying anyway. And
we kept pretending to believe them. It was this duality, this divide, that ruled
life there.”

“A Mountain of Crumbs” has received enthusiastic reviews from “The New York Times,”
“The New Yorker” “BookPage” “O: The Oprah Magazine, and the “Christian Science
Monitor,” to name a few.

Elena Gorokhova lives in Ridgewood, New Jersey with her second husband, their
daughter, and her 95-year-old mother, who followed her to America.” livingstonlibrary@BCCLS.org
